What is Red Light Therapy (RLT)?
What is Red Light Therapy (RLT)?
Red and near infrared light are part of the spectrum of light emitted by the sun (and by fire light too). When red and near infrared light are used therapeutically, it is commonly referred to as “Red Light Therapy.” Most of the research surrounding the bioactive effects of red and near infrared light fall in specific ranges of 630-680 nm and 800-880 nm.
RLT is also known as Photobiomodulation (PBM), a term specifically referring to the science of the non-thermal interaction of light on the cells in our body.
Red light and near infrared light have overlapping benefits for our body. For this reason, it is commonly recommended to use them together.
How does Red Light Therapy work?
How does Red Light Therapy work?
The health of every organ and cell in the body depends on energy being produced by the mitochondria in those cells. Skin, muscle, fat, bone, gland, or brain – when the mitochondria produce more energy, the cells in those tissues work better.
1. Increased Cellular ATP Production
Red and near infrared light therapy stimulates your body’s natural healing process at the cellular level through increased ATP production by the mitochondria. With an increase in mitochondrial ATP a series of metabolic events occur that may improve blood oxygenation, improve blood flow, increase collagen production, reduce overall inflammation, and improve cellular regeneration and protection.
2. Building Cellular Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Defenses
Light entering our skin creates a low-dose healthy metabolic stress (hormesis) that builds our cell’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant defense systems. This results in a reduced amount of cellular free radicals being produced and less oxidative stress for our cell, protecting our tissues from further inflammation.
3. Circadian Rhythm
Red light therapy can help regulate our circadian rhythm (sleep/wake) cycle. By viewing the red light wavelengths in the early morning and evenings (for example, as lighting in a room), you can help to support healthy sleep, hormone, mood and energy levels.
What is the difference between red and near infrared lights?
What is the difference between red and near infrared lights?
Red Light wavelengths (630-680nm being the most common range) are absorbed in highest proportions by our skin, making it very effective for improving skin health and collagen production. The visible nature of Red Light also has health benefits when observed by our eyes in an ambient light setting, including improved sleep and mood.
Near Infrared light wavelengths (common range of 800-880nm) are not visible to the human eye, but that does not mean they are not working. On the contrary, near infrared light can penetrate deeper into our tissues making it ideal for reducing pain, inflammation, and speeding recovery. Near infrared light cannot be seen, but can be felt as heat.
Red light and Near infrared light scatters once it enters our skin and they have overlapping benefits for our body. It’s for this reason they are commonly recommended to be used together, as they are in Fringe Red Light Therapy products.
What is irradiance, and how much do I need in a red light therapy device?
What is irradiance, and how much do I need in a red light therapy device?
Irradiance is the amount of light energy your skin receives over a period, often reported in mW/cm² (milliwatts per centimeter squared, or amount of power over a surface area). Clinical studies often report red light irradiance along with the time of use as “dosage.” Higher irradiance or power does not mean better results, if the dose is too great – the benefits are negated!
Many companies claim to have and irradiance of 100mW/cm² (or more) at 0 inches.
Man, that would be HOT! The sun is about 24 mW/cm² on our skin, and we think the sun knows a thing or two about healing! Think of your Fringe Red Light Therapy as a way to safely supplement the healing wavelengths from the sun that offer us the most benefits.
What is the difference between laser red light therapy and LED red light therapy?
What is the difference between laser red light therapy and LED red light therapy?
Laser red light therapy produces parallel, uniform rays of light at one wavelength. They can treat a small area, the rays travel deeper than LED lights and they can create more heat.
LED red light therapy (like with Fringe red light therapy products) produces non-parallel, non-uniform rays of light in a small range of wavelengths. They can treat a larger area, the rays don’t travel as deep and they create less heat.
Recent scientific studies have confirmed that you can get the same benefits from LED Red and Near Infrared light therapy as you can from lasers, at a fraction of the cost. Thankfully, this increases its accessibility to be used in clinics and at home, with the same healing benefits as red light laser therapy!

What is Blue Light Therapy?
What is Blue Light Therapy?
Blue light wavelengths in the 400s nm range are antimicrobial in nature, making them beneficial for certain skin and pelvic health uses. When blue light is used therapeutically, it is commonly referred to as “Blue Light Therapy.”
Our skin contains molecules called porphyrins that absorb blue light. Porphyrins are found in the glands that produce oil, which can get colonized with acne causing bacteria. When the porphyrins absorb blue light, the acne-causing bacteria are destroyed. This is called a bactericidal effect, and it explains why blue light is particularly effective in treating inflammatory acne, which is caused by bacteria.
Fringe makes 3 products with Blue Light modes: the Face Mask, The Neck & Chest Mask, and the Pelvic Wand.

What are the differences between the wraps, the panel, and the face mask?
What are the differences between the wraps, the panel, and the face mask?
All of our products provide light therapy, but there are some differences between them!
The panel - The panel provides red light at 660nm and near-infrared light at 850nm in a 1:1 ratio. It is higher powered (192W) so it can light up a whole area for ambient red light. It can also provide red light therapy directly to the body at 4 to 6 inches away from the desired area, anywhere on the body- head to toe! The option to turn off the near infrared light is also available on the panel.
The wraps (standard and extra long) - The wireless wraps provide red light at 660nm and near-infrared light at 850nm. They provide convenient red light therapy to the body with direct skin contact and can be used anywhere on the body- head to toe! They are lower powered than the panel (60W), so they cannot light up a room.
The joint wraps (knee, foot, & ankle wrap, elbow, hand & wrist wrap, and the neck & shoulder wrap) - The wireless joint wraps provide red light at 660nm and near-infrared light at 850nm. The joint wraps also have an optional vibration feature. They provide the exact same wavelengths as the wraps, just in different shapes specifically designed to be convenient for certain joints- but they can also be used anywhere on the body!
The head wrap - The wireless head wrap provides red light at 650nm, near infrared light at 810nm and deep penetrating near infrared light at 1050nm. These wavelengths were chosen because they have been found in studies to be the most beneficial for specifically brain health! The head wrap is also very uniquely shaped to be conveniently and comfortably worn on your head, but it can be used on other body parts if you like.
The face mask & the Neck & Chest Mask- The wireless face mask and the neck and chest mask have 3 different modes that provide red light, near infrared light, and blue light. The red light provided is at 630nm, the near infrared light is at 830nm, and the blue light provided is at 415nm. The masks have an option to have no infrared light (mode three, red only). They also contain a blue light mode. The masks are designed to be convenient and comfortable to wear on your face, or neck and chest, or neck and upper back. You can use it on other body parts if you like, but it may not be as effective for deeper tissue healing.
The Pelvic Wand- The wireless light therapy wand has 3 different modes: red light, near infrared light, and blue light. The red light provided is at 630nm, the near infrared light is at 830nm, and the blue light is at 415nm. There is also an optional vibration feature. The wand is unique as it is the only product that can be used internally- while it can be used internally, it can also be used externally to an extent.
When would I use a wrap vs a panel?
When would I use a wrap vs a panel?
The Fringe red light therapy panel and the Fringe red light therapy wraps are both versatile products that can both do many of the same things- so it is important to understand how they both work to help make your decision!
There are 2 pathways for red light to be absorbed into our body - through our eyes (visual pathway) and through our skin (physical pathway).
The visual pathway is associated with circadian rhythm balancing, mood benefits, and promoting relaxation. The visual pathway is great for sleep, mood disorders, exercise, yoga, meditation, or supplementing sunlight in darker months.
The physical pathway is associated with improving circulation, decreased inflammation, stimulation of cellular energy (or ATP), pain relief, recovery, and healing!
The panel is the most convenient way to reach the visual pathway.
You just need to set up the panel in a room, turn on the RED switch, and bask in the light. In the evenings, red light in your environment can help stimulate the production of melatonin and help balance your circadian rhythm! It can also help promote relaxation, or supplement the sunlight in darker months.
The panel also has longer timers built in so it can stay on continuously for up to an hour. The panel can also turn off the near infrared light for room lighting.
The wrap can also reach the visual pathway, but it may be less convenient for some.
Because the wraps are lower powered, you would need to have the wrap near you and allow the light to enter into your vision. For your own comfortability, don't stare into the lights. It’s only less convenient because the whole room is not lit up, so it is harder to go about a routine, if you wanted to. The wrap does turn off after 20 mins as well; You can turn it back on if you wanted to do more time. The infrared light is always on with the wraps, so you may feel some warmth from the wrap as well.
The wrap is the most convenient way to reach the physical pathway.
You just need to put it against your clean dry skin in whatever area you are looking to focus on.
If you want to secure the wrap to your body, they are wireless, so you can have the freedom to move around! Red Light therapy wraps are lower power devices and highly absorbed into our skin because of their direct contact with it. Quite simply, when the light is in direct contact with your skin – it has nowhere else to go! Due to the direct skin contact nature of Fringe wraps, the units have less power (60W) so we can deliver the appropriate intensity of light for a treatment (24-30mW/cm²).
The panel can also reach the physical pathway- however, it may be less convenient for some people.
If you need to do red light therapy without something touching your skin, the panel is the best choice for that!
To do a session with your panel, set your panel up 4-6 inches away from the body area you are looking to focus on. You can focus on any area of your body with a panel, and you may also be able to get a larger surface area with the panel. Indirect Red-Light Therapy (panels) are higher powered devices but that does not necessarily mean more light is absorbed into our skin. When the light source is 4-6 inches away from our skin, a large portion of the light is scattered before it reaches our skin. Due to the indirect nature of red-light therapy panels, the units have a higher power rating (192W) so we can accommodate for light that is lost and deliver the appropriate intensity of light for a treatment: approx. 24-30mW/cm².
The panel can also turn off the near infrared light, and do red light only, if your skin is more sensitive. The wrap cannot do this.
How often and how long should I use my Fringe Red Light Therapy products?
How often and how long should I use my Fringe Red Light Therapy products?
Wrap: We recommend using your Fringe red light therapy wrap once a day for a 20 minute session. You can do multiple body parts for 20 minutes each- just stick to the 20 minutes in any one area.
There are times when your doctor may recommend you use it twice a day for 5-20 minute sessions (typically for chronic conditions). Please consult with a healthcare provider before going over recommendations.
Panel: We recommend using your Fringe red light therapy panel 4-6 inches away from the body, once a day, for a 10-30 minute sessions. You can do multiple body parts for 10-30 minutes each.
Room lighting with a panel: You can use the panel to light up a room for as many hours during the day or night as you would like- but for sleep we recommend lighting up your room for 30 mins - 1 hour before bed. You can also do 30 mins - 1 hour in the morning as well for an extra boost!
Face Mask, Chest Mask, or Wand: We recommend using once a day on any one mode for 10 minutes, 3-7 times/week. We don’t recommend using all 3 modes in one day or in one session.
These are good guidelines for MOST people, but everyone is different! If needed, you can make modifications in the length of session time, distance from the wrap or panel, consistency (3x/week instead of daily), or lower the intensity of light (on the wraps only).
Where should I position my wrap?
Where should I position my wrap?
Place the wrap with direct skin contact over the area where you are needing extra help, pain relief, blood flow, or reduced inflammation. You can use any wrap on any part of your body- head to toe! Over the face? Absolutely! Just be sure to close your eyes and use that 50% intensity for sensitive skin! You may want to do a 5 or 10 minute session on the face as well.Brain health? Fringe wraps will penetrate through most tissue in the body, except very dense tissue- like the skull! The Head wrap has a deep penetrating wavelength, making it a more effective choice when it comes to brain health. However, you can still use it over the forehead and temple area to reach the brain, as that is where the skull is the thinnest.

Is there UV light in Fringe Red Light Therapy products?
No. Red Light Therapy does not typically involve UV light, and Fringe Red Light Therapy products contain Red and Near infrared light wavelengths only. The face mask has blue light wavelengths as well, but still no UV light!
The wavelengths used in red light therapy (red and near infrared lights) are outside of UV range, so they are not harmful to the eyes. Red light is generally fine to look at, however some people find the light irritating to their eyes. You can look away from the light, keep your eyes closed or use the red light blocking glasses included with the panel.
What can I do if the wrap or panel feels hot?
What can I do if the wrap or panel feels hot?
Everyone's sensitivity to light is different! You can sometimes base your "reaction" to Red Light Therapy on how you feel with 20 minutes of sunlight. If 20 mins of direct sunlight can make your skin start to get pink and red you may also little more sensitive to Red Light Therapy.
There are a few things you can do to adjust if your wrap or panel feels too hot.
- Increase distance
Panel- you can increase your distance from the panel beyond the recommended 6 inches.
Wrap- you can allow some ‘breathing room” between your wrap and your skin, up to an inch of distance.
- Reduce the time of use
You can use the wrap or panel for 5 or 10 minutes instead of 20 minutes
- Reduce the light intensity (sun button) to 50% light.
On Fringe red light therapy wraps, you can reduce the light intensity to 50%
There are a few different skin types and after sun reactions- if you have lighter skin that turns pink in the sun, or dark skin that absorbs a lot of light, you can still use red light therapy, but some modifications, like mentioned above, may be needed!
While red light therapy is very safe, it may not be for everyone. If you feel you are too light sensitive for your wrap or panel, reach out to us- hi@fringeheals.com
What will happen if I get too much red and near infrared light therapy?
What will happen if I get too much red and near infrared light therapy?
Fringe Red Light Therapy products are designed to give an adequate amount of light energy for effective outcomes, without being TOO much light intensity. "Less is more", is one of our philosophies with red light therapy. While higher-doses and higher powered machines are typically still safe, they may not be as effective or efficient. Too much red light on your skin may create a heat type rash or skin redness, similar to a sunburn.
